Square took a new twist of things when they introduced Final Fantasy Tactics to the US, the first strategy/RPG released by Squaresoft. Two nations are locked in war as they battle one another for succession to the throne. Desperation called in drastic measures as some attempt to harness the mythical Zodiac Stones and their power to obtain victory. But one young man, belonging to a highly revered and respected ruling family, would not stand up for the corrupt, unjust ways of his brothers and so departed to learn that what has developed could destroy the world... A new battle system was inputed into this pioneer RPG, where you select groups of fighters from your army to participate in the conflict and duke it out in full polygonal environments with realistic weather and terrain effects. Also, you are given the option to change your characters occupations. Just like the real world, every job you master adds to an extensive resume, which in turn grants better jobs to hit the opposition harder and gives greater potential to use more powerful spells or wield more exotic weapons. Unlike other RPGs where the battles are brief, sometimes packed with action, Final Fantasy Tactics is reminiscent to the game of chess. Watching over a variety pack army of 16 troops is a tedious job, but once you've mastered those jobs, you'll find that Final Fantasy Tactics is a game for the thinkers and that it pays off well. |
